The most critical period in pig farming is the weaning of the piglets. At that time, when they are 3 to 4 weeks old, the piglets undergo a radical change in diet and are exposed to numerous bacterial infections. The use of antibiotics is consequently widespread around weaning.

Following an increasing number of cases of bacterial resistance to antibiotics in humans and animals, the authorities have set a goal to reduce their use by at least 50% by the year 2020.

The Porcbiota project is intended to provide a real alternative in the form of a synbiotic agent, consisting of innovative pre- and pro-biotics, and administered through the feed around the birth of piglets. An early modulation of the piglets’ intestinal microbiota and immune system will thus be obtained to reduce and even eliminate the use of antibiotics, while ensuring the performance and well-being of the animals as well as the profitability of breeding.

* The symbiotic effect is defined as the synergy of the probiotic and the prebiotic (1+1=3).
